The Oppression Of Women Susan Glaspell s Trifles And...

The Oppression of Women in a Male Dominated Society The plays Susan Glaspell’s Trifles and Sophocles’ Antigone, examine the contrast between the roles of women versus that of a man. The women in Trifles are viewed as second class citizens, who are expected to follow the beliefs and commands of the man, whereas, Antigone is a head strong and defiant woman, who didn’t mind challenging man’s authority. From the beginning of time, the view of women is that as inferior to men. In both of these plays, the women are expected to be seen, but not heard. In Trifles, the women are portrayed as housewives, responsible for bearing children, and keeping the house. Throughout the play, the attorney made several comments insinuating that Mrs. Wright wasn’t keeping up with her womanly duties. He stated â€Å"here is a mess, dirty towels! Not much of a housekeeper would you say, ladies† (Glaspell 1109-1110)? The men are viewed as head of the house and of the woman. The women’s input and ideas are often overlooked and they have no say in the final decisions. Before her marriage, Mrs. Wright was described as a nice and pretty, but a bit shy and nervous. But that changed greatly after her wedding day. Her spirit was reduced to nothing. She spent her days focusing on her quilts, preserves, and caring for her canary. She didn’t receive any type of appreciation for her hard work. After the death of her beloved canary at the hands of her husband, she lost control of her emotions and killed him. Her

The reduced size of the modern family i.e nuclear family is a result of industrial society. 3. Impersonalness and lack of intimate communication : Owing to heterogeneous composition, urban people know each other only in superficial and impersonal ways. A large proportion of urban social relations takes place between nameless strangers and they last only for a limited period of time. One may know a person as a bank cashier, another as a co-worker, another as a grocer, but they are seldom known in an intimate way. Economic interests dominate this in personal urban world. The city becomes a complex mass of people living close together, but without emotional ties. The urban dweller often feels lonely and isolated even in the midst of vast crowds. The impersonality, formality of relations and the breakdown of intimate communication in an urban society gives rise to many urban industrial problems. In metropolitan areas, neighbors frequently live side by side in anonymity. 4. Materialism : In an industrial society external appearances and material possessions are of primary importance. City dwellers are known for their status symbols (such as salaries, car, video cassettes etc.) Urban people do not believe in plain living and high thinking. 5. Descriptive Essay - Original Writing - 1085 Words

I WAS SITTING IN a taxi, wondering if I had overdressed for the evening, when I looked out the window and saw Mom rooting through a Dumpster. It was just after dark. A blustery March wind whipped the steam coming out of the manholes, and people hurried along the sidewalks with their collars turned up. I was stuck in traffic two blocks from the party where I was heading. Mom stood fifteen feet away. She had tied rags around her shoulders to keep out the spring chill and was picking through the trash while her dog, a blackandwhite terrier mix, played at her feet. Mom s gestures were all familiar—the way she tilted her head and thrust out her lower lip when studying items of potential value that she d hoisted out of the Dumpster, the way her eyes widened with childish glee when she found something she liked. Her long hair was streaked with gray, tangled and matted, and her eyes had sunk deep into their sockets, but still she reminded me of the mom she d been when I was a kid, swandiving off cliffs and painting in the desert and reading Shakespeare aloud. Her cheekbones were still high and strong, but the skin was parched and ruddy from all those winters and summers exposed to the elements. To the people walking by, she probably looked like any of the thousands of homeless people in New York City. It had been months since I laid eyes on Mom, and when she looked up, I was overcome with panic that she d see me and call out my name, and that someone on the way to the same partyShow MoreRelatedDescriptive Essay - Original Writing1110 Words   |  5 PagesI don’t know how I got to where I am, but I’m here now, and I have to win if I want to live. Viola in The Twelfth Night - 580 Words

Who is Viola? Who REALLY is Viola? Viola is a very cunning, smart, and interesting character. This is shown in Shakespeare’s The Twelfth Night, this book is about three different lovers. The Duke loves Olivia, Olivia loves Cesario/Viola, and Cesario/Viola loves the Duke. Viola is trying to set up a new life after surviving a shipwreck in which her brother â€Å"died.† Viola is a cunning lady with lots of attitude. Viola influences almost every other character as well. She unintentionally tricks both the Duke and Olivia, she confuses Antonia, who believes she is Sebastian (her brother), and she confuses her brother, Sebastian, who believed that she was dead. Viola is someone we can all learn from. In Shakespeare’s The Twelfth Night, Viola is very much like a spy. She knew secret information of all three people (the Duke, Olivia, and herself) in the love triangle. I have been lead to this conclusion because of both her knowledge of secrets, and by how she relayed information to and from the Duke. Many quotes showed her secret knowledge, for example, in act 2 scene 3 â€Å"My master loves her dearly; And I, poor monster, fond as much on him; And she, mistaken, seems to dote on me.† (Lines 15-40) Viola knew of the pickle of love everyone was in before anyone else figured it out. Also, in act 2 scene 4 (Lines 117-125) Viola said â€Å"But let concealment, like worm i’ the bud, Feed on her damask cheek;† In this part of the book, Viola is like a spy because she knows both how men and how womenShow MoreRelatedViola in William Shakespeares The Twelfth Night Essay551 Words   |  3 PagesViola in William Shakespeares The Twelfth Night Viola as a main character is the most deceitful; she tricks everybody into believing shes a man, but as well as being most deceitful she is also the most honest and sincere. Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. After I have gone around and done a check and answered a few call bells I started preparing to hand out the night time medication. I unlock the door to the drug room and take out the looked trolley which contains the residents drugs. Made sure had clean pots and spoons and straws. All rooms had a jug with fresh water and a suitable container to drink from. NC has standards for medication management which had to follow as well as regulation 13 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and my code of conduct. During the drug round I tried not to be too disturbed but did answered call bells during the drug round. For each and every patient checked date and time on mar sheet and double checked it was the right patient and checked the date on the box or blister to see that the medication was not expired. Check the dosage and admit way. Trying to be up to date in my knowledge by reading on MIRA web site. Also checked how the medication had been documented over the day, were they refused? When was the last dose of the same medication he or she has before bed time? Is the resident sitting up properly to be able to swallow the medication? Are there enough water in the jugs? During this time I also checked how the patient were feeling by talking to them. Were they talking as normal or was their speech slow or different? How is there breathing? Are they warm enough, do they look ill, do they have a temperature? Is the catheter draining? Do they need any PRNG drugs? Constipated or in any pain? Then I signed the mar sheet to confirm that the resident had taken his medication or signed for any refusal or other reasons. When it was time to give the controlled drugs. I called one of the senior staff to come with me to get the drugs in a special locked area assigned for controlled drugs. I took the CD signature book and with the other staff checked the drug for expire date, name, strength admit way, and sign in the book. Then we went to the patient, both of us, and gave the patients its medication. Was an oral administer way so we stayed while she swallowed the medication. ( This is regulated as well by the regulations and guide lines as I had when was handing out the medication. MIRA and ICQ are 2 body which can control the management of controlled drugs and to check so all guidelines, legislations and code of conduct are followed. When all the residents had had their medication, I went one more time to check so they were okay. Then I checked with the staff to get a rapport about any issues or problem I should know about and then I took my coffee to do the documentation. Overall documentation was made and I also made sure any general information was documented and brought forward like bath requests, visitors, out goings and appointments. There was 2 kind off drugs which needed to be ordered in the morning so these was written up as well. Documentation is of high importance because it gives evidence of quality and that all legislations and human right are followed as mental capacity act, confidentiality, quality of care and that care plans are followed as well as patient’s safety and consent. At my workplace we document in a computer system and have care plans in a person folder in case we cannot access the information on the computer. To easy overview changes in care we have a ay to day based handover sheet as well. ICQ regulates that the documentation is correct done and they have a minimum standards that the nursing home need to apply to. When it was an appropriate time, a senior staff and me checked and counted the controlled drugs (that are not in daily use) and signed that they are correct as I am responsible to do according to Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2006 and Controlled Drugs (Supervision of Management and use) as for England, the ICQ guidelines and code of conduct and NC standards. During the night helped a few residents to the oiled according to the care plan and the manual and handling act and I made sure I had their consent first. Also checked the residents regardless, once an hour, but it always became more often as I checked the other resident at the same time as someone rang the call bell. Some residents needed to be turned regular ( the carnelian will tell me how ( manual handling)and how often and why). During the shift I also checked so the staff was fine and if they had anyt hing to rapport to me or have had any problems during the shift so far, and so they follow policies and procedures for the workplace and annual handling act and following the care plan. I did this by working with them and checking residents regularly to see if they were turned, dry, offered a drink if awake and had their call bell with in reach. The staff called me because a dressing had come off on a residents foot. I looked in the care plan to see what actions and what dressing they have had applied on the wound and re dressed it and then documented it in the care plan. I had to do a phone call to this patient’s family to give an update of how their loved one was progressing. How to cite Reflective writing, Essays

Management and Cost Accounting for Leadership- myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theManagement and Cost Accounting for Leadership. Answer: The background of Woolworths can be stated as it is the longest supermarket chain from Australia. Operating more than 1990 stores all over Australia, the company runs its business through 11,500 team members with distribution centers, stores and the support offices for providing the customers with wide range of services, convenience, value and superior services. As it falls under the most innovative Australian retailers, the company is well aware about the fact that the customers always look for simple and new way for shipping and accordingly provide the customers with comfortable experience of shopping (Woolworths.com.au 2017). The company recognizes the cost leadership approach as the action set for delivering or producing the services or goods at minimized cost as compared to the competitors along with various acceptable features to the customers. To get maximum output at the minimized cost, the company developed sale-up / costs down approach for last few years that were designed to reduce cost associated to production and Woolworths successfully applied the strategies to lower their prices (Mortimer and Ingersoll 2015). Looking at the financial statement of the company, it can be identified that the cost of goods sold of the company is directly related with the increase or decrease in the sales level. However, the cost of doing the business for the year 2016 is higher as compared to the sales level as it reached to $ 13,074.5 million as compared to $ $ 12,702.4 million in 2014. Looking at the rent expenses it is identified that the rent of the company is in increasing trend and from $ 1898.70 million in 2014 it went up to $ 2033.9 million in 2016. However, the company was able to make payment of its borrowing during the year that reduced the finance cost of the company during 2016 to $ 207.7 million from $ 218.9 million in 2014 (Woolworths.com.au 2017). The cost leadership approach is used by the company for cost reduction with regard to the operating cost like just-in-time approach. This strategy is used for managing the products in the supply chain for reducing the wastage cost and storage cost through making the goods available to the retailers exactly at the time when they require the goods. To implement the strategy efficiently the company is required to implement the cost replenishment approach efficiently for forecasting the expected demand for the future period. The benefits of this strategy will reduce overall cost through cutting off the storage cost and wastages and increasing the margin of profit (Klein 2017). However, the primary challenges that the company faces here is the long range of distance between suppliers and stores as the suppliers of Woolworth is scattered all over Australia. Apart from this, the storage costs are expected to rise if the system of prediction gives poor performance (Fernie and Sparks 2014). There are various social benefits and value additions through minimizing the wastes as it deliver the regular opportunities to the communities and the cost forecast and budget of the company can be prepared as follows Particulars 2017-18 ($ m) 2018-19 ($ m) 2019-20 ($ m) Budgeted sales 39,000.00 40,950.00 42,997.50 Less: cost of goods sold 30,030.00 31,941.00 32,248.13 Gross profit 8,970.00 9,009.00 10,749.38 Expenses Depreciation on fixed asset 170.00 182.00 178.00 Amortization of intangible assets 25.00 28.00 32.00 Employee remuneration and the on-cost expenses 4,200.00 4,700.00 4,600.00 Superannuation expenses 720.00 610.00 680.00 Expenses towards share-based payments 120.00 110.00 90.00 Minimum lease payments 1,200.00 900.00 1,400.00 Other operating expenses 400.00 670.00 320.00 Total Expenses 6,835.00 7,200.00 7,300.00 Net profit before interest and tax 2,135.00 1,809.00 3,449.38 Less: interest expenses 560.00 410.00 730.00 Net profit before tax 1,575.00 1,399.00 2,719.38 Less: Tax expenses 614.25 517.63 1,087.75 Profit after tax 960.75 881.37 1,631.63 From the above budget, the performance of the company can be analyzed as that the sales of the company will increase by 5% over the next 3 years and the cost of gods sold will be 77% and 78% for the year 2018-19 and 2019-20. However, the company is expected to reduce the COGS and bring it to 75% in 2019-20 (Santos et al. 2015). Further, the depreciation expenses of the company will increase during 2018-19 as compared to 2017-18 as the company is expecting to purchase a new machine for the factory. The amortization expenses will be in the increasing trend. Further, the superannuation expenses of the company are expected to reduce during 2018-19 as few employees are retiring in the previous year (Arli et al. 2013). It can be noted from the budget that the expenses that are expected to increase in 2018-19 as compared to 2017-18 are expected to be reduced by the company during 20129-20.therefore, it can be said that the company will take the necessary steps to minimize the cost wherever possible. From the above analysis it can be concluded that Woolworths is one of the trusted brands in Australia in the retail sector and the company faces high level of competition owing the availability of the substitute products. However, the company can achieve competitive advantages over its competitors through offering the products at lower cost, which is possible through minimization of wastages and curtailing the expenses, wherever possible. Therefore, the company is recommended to diversify the range of products in the future years. For instance, Woolworths became more successful after taking over the liquor store from Dan Murphy for delivering the new product range in the same market for attracting new customers. This was a good strategy to achieve competitive advantage in a mature market like Australian retail market. Along with reducing the wastages and cost, the company is also suggested to provide the communities with their requirements and preferences in which they operate. None Provided1 Essay Paper Through out history the world has seen some generations that have made an impact more than all of its predecessors. The decade from 1960 to 1970 was definitely one of those eras. The people didnt follow the teachings of its elders, but rejected them for an alternative culture which was their very own(Harris 14). Made up of the younger population of the time this new culture was such a radical society that they were given their own name which is still used today. They came to be called the Hippies. The Hippie movement started in San Francisco, California and spread across the United States, through Canada, and into parts of Europe (World Book). But it had its greatest influence in America. During the 1960s a radical group called the Hippies shocked America with their alternative lifestyle and radical beliefs. Hippies came from many different places and had many different backgrounds. All Hippies were young, from the ages of 15 to 25(Worldbook). They left their families and did it for many different reasons. Some rejected their parents ideas, some just wanted to get away, and others simply were outcasts, who could only fit in with the Hippie population. Under 25 became a magical age, and young people all over the world were united by this bond (Harris 15). This bond was of Non-conformity and it was the Creed of the Young (Harris 15). Most Hippies came from wealthy middle class families. Some people said that they were spoiled and wasting their lives away. But to Hippies themselves this was a way of life and no one was going to get in the Hippies flocked to a certain area of San Francisco on the corner of Haight Street and Ashbury Street, where the world got their first view of this unique group. This place came to be known as the Haight Ashbury District. There were tours of the district and it was said that the tour was the only foreign tour within the continental limits of the United States (Stern 147). The Hippies were so different that the conservative middle class could not relate to them and saw them as aliens. The Haight Ashbury district lies in the very center of San Francisco. In the years of 1965 and 1966 the Hippies took over the Haight Ashbury district(Cavan 49). There they lived and spread their psychedelic theme through out the whole area. In the Haight Ashbury district there were two parks that that all Hippies knew well. The most famous of the two was the Golden Gate Park(Cavan 43). The single most important event that put the Hippies on the map was held at the Golden Gate Park. It was called the Trips Festival. The Trips Festival was a week long festival designed to celebrate the LSD experience(Stern 148). Besides this festival dozens of other events took place at Golden Gate Park, some of which were free concerts by The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane and Anti-War rallies held by Hippie political leaders. The other park is called the Buena Vista park and is known for housing hippies at night and for socializing during the day. As the 1960s progressed, the youth in America united. In 1969 400,000 young people materialized for three dizzying days to listen to rock and blues music, to wear funny clothing or no clothes at all, to talk, sing, dance, clap hands, to drink beer or smoke pot and make love-but mostly to marvel again and again that they were all there together (This Fabulous Century 64). This festival was held in a small town in up-state New York and came to be called Woodstock, after the town it was held in. Also in Greenwich Village, New York Hippies had a place. The Village on every Sunday was known to have hordes of singers with banjos and drums celebrating their youth together(Stern 103). One of the basic foundations of the Hippie movement was the flagrant use of illegal drugs. There were many drugs that the Hippies used but none was more used then marijuana. From 1960 to 1970 the number of Americans who had tried marijuana had increased from a few hundred thousand to 8,000,000.
